The Beetle Behind the Pendant

Every piece I make starts with something I found beautiful before I ever thought about turning it into jewelry. This one started with a beetle.

The frog beetle set inside this pendant is a real, preserved specimen, not a cast or a printed image. Once I actually looked into what it was, I realized the name barely does it justice.

Why It's Called a Frog Beetle

The name comes from its back legs, which are oversized and shaped a bit like a frog's. But it's not built for jumping. Those legs are for gripping tightly onto plant stems while it feeds, holding on through wind, rain, and whatever else the jungle throws at it. Entomologists actually call this group "frog-legged beetles" or "kangaroo beetles," part of a leaf beetle subfamily called Sagrinae.

The legs get more dramatic depending on gender. Males carry noticeably bigger hind legs than females, complete with a small spine used for shoving rival males out of the way when they're competing for a mate. Nature's version of throwing an elbow.

Built-In Iridescence

Here's the part that made this beetle feel made for resin. Its shell is naturally iridescent, most often a deep metallic green with flashes of red and gold running through the wing covers. That shimmer isn't paint and it isn't a coating, it's structural, built into the way the shell reflects light.

So when I set this one in real gold leaf, I wasn't trying to dress it up. The gold in the resin just picks up a shimmer that was already there.

Hard to Find, Harder to Recreate

Frog beetles live in dense tropical jungle across parts of Asia, including Malaysia, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, and the Philippines. In the wild, their large cocoons show up clinging to climbing vines like kudzu.

What's wild is that even zoos and museums with real resources have struggled to breed them in captivity. The larvae will only survive inside one very specific vine native to that region, and nobody has fully cracked how to replicate that outside the wild. Every specimen is, in a very real way, one the jungle made on its own terms.

Why That Matters for This Piece

I didn't choose this beetle because it was easy to source. I chose it because it's genuinely rare, genuinely strange, and genuinely beautiful in a way that doesn't need any help from me. My job was just to set it somewhere it could keep catching light the way it was always built to.

Each one of these pendants is hand-poured, so the way the gold leaf settles around the beetle is different every time. No two will ever come out the same.
